THE ORIGINAL Limb Saving MEROVA

The development of the MEROVA limb-saving method resulted from the need for a systematic application of care solutions that have crystallized during the past 25 years of our clinical practice.

Certain elements can -of course- be implemented in Hungarian conditions in accordance with international recommendations, and can therefore be integrated into practical work. However, in several matters, the adaptation of practical experiences and international thinking to Hungarian conditions is also present.

The development and systematization of the method is credited to the work of László MEcseky, István ROzsos, and Gergely VAdász – the name of the method is also an acronym formed from their last names.

The advantage of the method is that the step-by-step task sequence ensures the possibility of successful limb-saving even for colleagues who are less experienced with the problem, while also helping to inform patients, which is a fundamental condition for long-term success.

Through the application of the MEROVA method, major limb amputations (previously recommended) have become unnecessary in thousands of cases over the past 25 years, thus preserving patients’ mobility and ability to work, allowing them to lead a better quality of life. Premature amputations trigger irreversible processes at the individual, family, and social levels, and also places a significant burden on rehabilitation services.

With the consistent execution of the MEROVA method, the result is the saving of the patient’s limb and, thereby, their life.
