What do we refer to as varicose vein disease?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vascular surgery deals with the prevention and treatment of diseases in both the arterial (arterial) and venous (venous) systems. Diseases of the arterial system include various forms of arterial narrowing (upper and lower limbs, narrowing of the neck vessels, coronary artery narrowing), abnormal blood vessel dilatations, changes caused by diabetes (diabetic foot), and the changes in the venous system include varicose vein disease, symptoms after deep vein thrombosis, and abnormal vascular changes (rosacea, hemangioma). Early detection of these abnormalities is essential for successful treatment and prevention. The background of venous congestion symptoms includes genetic predispositions, a sedentary or standing lifestyle, and various internal diseases. When the so-called valves tire out and are unable to close properly, blood flows backward in the veins, leading to chronic swelling, pain, and nighttime leg cramps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Is a specialist necessary to solve the problem?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s a mistake to think that symptoms will disappear on their own or that a small cream will heal them. Sports, diet, and a balanced lifestyle are important, but sometimes a pregnancy can significantly worsen the health condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>How is the severity of the disease determined, and is surgery necessary?<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter taking the patient\u2019s data, an ultrasound examination is essential. This procedure is painless and shows how dilated the veins are and where pathological reflux occurs, which could cause the disease or further complications. If the patient has diabetes, additional sensory tests may be required.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What treatment options are available?<\/strong><br \/>\nVaricose veins can sometimes be like the iceberg that the Titanic ran into: only the tip of the iceberg is visible. The absence of significant venous dilation in the leg does not mean that the venous circulation is not affected. In fact, the opposite is often true\u2014patients often come with veins as thick as a finger, and it\u2019s only then that significant symptoms arise from the pathological dilation. If ultrasound results show no venous circulation disorder (e.g., reflux), the doctor may recommend sclerotherapy for the patient. In this procedure, a &#8220;tissue adhesive&#8221; is injected into the dilated section of the vein, and it is then compressed and bandaged. The injected substance, combined with the bandage, allows the vein to collapse, completing the therapy. Another option is the FOAM (foam) treatment, where a stronger version of the tissue adhesive in foam form is used to close veins with more significant dilation. The doctor performs these small injections while the patient is standing, which helps the veins to stand out and become more visible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>How painful is the procedure?<\/strong><br \/>\nThey say that if we were to do it ourselves, we would love to be on the other end of the needle, and every doctor would prefer to be on the needle&#8217;s other side&#8230; In short, once the needle enters the vein, it causes a discomfort similar to a mosquito bite. However, this is currently the only procedure that eliminates superficial and abnormal veins and redirects the blood flow to the normal channels. This procedure ensures that leg swelling decreases, the feeling of heavy legs and nighttime cramps disappear, and the cosmetic result is also important\u2014the blue, protruding veins disappear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What if this type of treatment isn\u2019t enough?<\/strong><br \/>\nIf venous flow has already reached an irreversible stage, surgery may be necessary. However, don\u2019t worry\u2014the operation is not like it used to be. The old, invasive, long-lasting procedures are a thing of the past. Today, veins are treated with delicate internal techniques such as welding or sealing them. This technique has been available in Hungary for nearly 20 years, and it is now universally acknowledged in professional forums as being more effective, more aesthetic, and more comfortable for the patient. Laser and microwave heat treatment ensures complete disappearance of the dilated section. During the laser treatment, a small incision is made, and a laser fiber is inserted into the vein. The fiber is gradually pulled back under continuous ultrasound control, and the laser energy heats the blood, causing it to clot. This energy also affects the vessel wall, causing the proteins to precipitate, which leads to shrinkage and closure of the vein. The procedure can be clearly monitored on ultrasound images. During the microwave procedure, the main venous trunk is treated using the well-known microwave energy. This latter treatment is still considered a novelty worldwide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What is needed for the surgery?<\/strong><br \/>\nFortunately, the procedure can be completed in a single day. The patient arrives in the morning with all the necessary documents. After a quick anesthesiologist\u2019s examination, the vein to be treated is identified (which helps the surgeon during the operation), and then the patient is taken to the operating room. The patient will receive a detailed list of preoperative instructions when scheduling the appointment. For the surgery, bring slippers, pajamas, and toiletries. Always bring previous medical documents and ensure that your current medications and allergies are communicated to the medical team.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What will happen after the surgery?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe procedure takes about an hour (depending on whether one or both legs need to be operated on). After the surgery, the patient is slightly disoriented (patients are not fully anesthetized, only sedated) and will be given pain relief. Both the laser and microwave treatments cause discomfort due to heat, which is why this method is recommended. After the surgery, the patient will be bandaged, and as soon as they wake up, they will start using their previously troublesome but now refreshed legs. After drinking enough fluids and urinating, the patient can be discharged about 3 hours after the surgery, with accompaniment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What should I expect in the days after surgery?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe evening after the surgery, keep the bandage on the leg, but remove it the next morning and replace it with compression stockings. Compression is recommended for 2-3 weeks after surgery. If you do not want to wear compression stockings, a well-chosen bandage (gauze) will reduce the risk of thrombosis. It is essential to follow the appropriate compression level and coverage (knee or thigh), and the quality of the bandage (short stretch) and its application are crucial for the success of the treatment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What result can I expect?<\/strong><br \/>\nMedical technology has made significant progress in recent decades. Thanks to this, the treatments now use modern equipment that causes significantly less surgical strain and risk. After the surgery, a follow-up consultation will be scheduled. The cosmetic result will be visible a few weeks after the procedure, and full recovery usually takes 6-8 to 12 weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Is surgery really necessary? Is there no other solution?<\/strong><br \/>\nIf varicose vein surgery is delayed, symptoms are likely to worsen, leading to chronic venous insufficiency, leg ulcers, persistent leg pain, nighttime calf cramps, and a feeling of heaviness in the legs. Surgery in complicated cases carries greater risks. Inflammation of the vein wall and the reverse flow of blood contribute to the formation of blood clots, which may lead to superficial or deep vein thrombosis or embolism. Embolism refers to circulating blood clots that can lead to fatal pulmonary embolism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Why can\u2019t I access modern techniques in public hospitals?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s important to understand that the main downside of modern surgical methods is the equipment required, which is relatively expensive. These procedures are not funded by the National Health Insurance Fund (NEAK), so patients must bear the full cost of the surgery. However, the recovery time is much shorter, and there is no incisions or stitches! Needle-puncture points leave no trace, which is what laser and microwave treatments can offer. The latest techniques always come at a higher price, and health insurance only reimburses basic costs. Surgical fees include the full procedure (anesthesia, monitoring, follow-up), with no extra hidden charges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What about varicose veins during pregnancy?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe question is more complex than it seems. Multiple pregnancies increase the risk of varicose veins, which are also hereditary. Therefore, prevention is the first step: exercise, movement, fluid intake, and a healthy diet. If, despite these measures, the visible veins become bothersome, compression stockings may be the solution, as pelvic pressure can be controlled with them. There are specifically designed compression stockings for pregnant women that are comfortable to wear. Pregnant women should do venous exercises, elevate their legs, and avoid tight clothing, high heels, and heavy lifting. During pregnancy, any medication should be discussed with a specialist, and if symptoms persist after childbirth, the most gentle treatment options can be chosen. Ultrasound can be done at any time to avoid complications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Bleeding varicose veins \u2013 what should I do?<\/strong><br \/>\nThis frightening complication occurs when the skin above an untreated varicose vein thins out, and a careless bump or rub causes bleeding. A bleeding varicose vein looks dramatic, but it is not life-threatening. In some cases, it stops on its own, but it\u2019s essential to take proper precautions to prevent further issues. If pressure dressing does not stop the bleeding, consult a specialist. Have sterile gauze and a strong bandage available!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Why do I have to pay extra if I have an extreme body type?<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen the surgeon schedules the procedure, a reservation secures the time needed for the surgery. If the patient&#8217;s condition requires additional staff or special attention (such as multiple medical issues, consultations with other doctors, or excess weight), the difference must be covered. It is important to ensure clear communication so that the patient understands any potential issues caused by their health condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>I\u2019ve decided\u2014I want the surgery tomorrow!<\/strong><br \/>\nOur top priority is your satisfaction, so preparation for surgery is key, both physically and psychologically. Can I still undergo surgery?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes, the answer is yes\u2014it won\u2019t hinder the success of the surgery.
